 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena Kinta'nija Peres (April 16, 1971 - March 31, 1995) popularly referred to as Selena, was an American Tejano singer. The "Queen Tejano music", her contribution to fashion and music made her one the most popular Mexican-American entertainers of all time. Billboard magazine placed her third on their list of the "Greatest Latino Artists" based on Latin albums and Latin chart of songs. For her choice of clothing, media outlets called her the Tejano Madonna. She is also regarded as one of the most influential Latin artists of all time . She is credited for catapulting the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest child of the Quintanilla family, she debuted in the world of music as part of the group Selena y Los Dinos, that also included her older siblings A.B. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. Her reputation was frequently discredited in the 1980s and refused bookings at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, a male-dominated genre. After being awarded the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she gained popularity. In 1989, she signed with EMI Latin and released her debut album entitled Entre a Mi Mundo (1992). Her brother was her chief music producer and songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo made it to the top spot in the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums charts for eight consecutive weeks. Its commercial success was praised by music critics as making it the "breakthrough" album of her career. One of the singles, "Como la Flor" was a huge hit and became her signature song. Live! (1993) was nominated for the Best Mexican/American Album at 1994 Grammy Awards. It was the first Tejano recording to win this award. In 1994 she came out with Amor Prohibido, which became one of the top-selling Latin albums sold in the United States. It was praised by critics as being responsible for Tejano music's first commercially viable era because it became one the most popular Latin music subgenres at the time.
